MADISON (WMSN) -- A record snowfall followed by bitter cold weather created an ice pack on some Madison area streets that quickly turned to glare ice in some places.



The City had to shut down part of John Nolen Drive Thursday due to the dangerous icy conditions.



As of 9:00 p.m. the Dane County Sheriff's Department responded to more than 85 calls for slide-offs due to the slippery roads.



In many cases, officers say drivers were going too fast for conditions.



Street crews are working to make the roads safe, but salt is ineffective when temperatures drop below 15 degrees.



Metro busses were running 45 minutes late during rush hour due to the road conditions.



Authorities are encouraging anyone who does not have to drive to stay home, or take the bus.
