MADISON (WMSN) -- A Madison Common Council decision Tuesday night could make or break plans to redevelop the Edgewater Hotel downtown.

Council members will vote on an appeal by the project's developer.

Earlier this month, the City Landmarks Commission blocked the plan, saying the hotel needs to be "visually compatible" with the Mansion Hill neighborhood.

The Hammes Company appealed the ruling.

A two-thirds majority in the city council is needed to overturn that decision.

Fifty-two people signed up to speak Tuesday night.

"It's like a fine painting, you say we'll tear just one down, but what happens is it's like a fine piece of art," said Gene Devitt, with the Mansion Hill Historic Neighborhood. "You start cutting away the pieces and you're left with nothing."

"What's being proposed here at the Edgewater by Hammes Company is part of what makes living down here, owning property down here, and owning a business down here very cool, said Thomas Sweeney. "I am thrilled they chose my neighborhood and can't wait or them to move forward on this."
