MADISON (WMSN) -- The American Idol - Season 9 kicked off, Milwaukee native and last season's 3rd place finisher Danny Gokey performed for frenzied fans in Madison.



At the Q106.3 studios, Gokey told FOX 47 that watching the show kick off season 9 is a little weird.



"When I saw the commercial, it was like seeing and x-girlfriend, it was real awkward. I was like - Oh my God, there's new contestants on the show. Are you kidding me? This is our show!" Gokey joked.



Several dozen fans packed a room at the radio station to hear Gokey and his band play a half dozen acoustic songs from his new album.



They earned entry to the intimate concert by calling the station when they heard the "song of the day."



According to the station, the response was overwhelming.



Gokey's album comes out March 2.
