MADISON, Wis. - Wisconsin media advocates and municipal leaders have brokered a compromise to resolve a fight over redactions in public records.
Police departments have been redacting personal information such as names, addresses and gender from reports. That has caused problems for reporters and crime victims.
Authorities argue a 2012 federal ruling forbids them from disclosing any information derived from driver records.
A St. Croix County judge ruled in March the federal decision doesn't mean the city of New Richmond is required to redact its reports. The city plans to appeal.
Meanwhile, the Wisconsin Newspaper Association and the League of Wisconsin Municipalities have developed a form requesters can fill out to obtain full copies.
Both sides say it's a stop-gap measure until a state appeals court rules on the dispute.
